The real reason you don't hear from Anne Heche anymore

Anne Heche went from being one of Hollywood's most talked about and sought-after stars in the early 2000s to falling out of the spotlight. It seems like she may have disappeared all together. But in reality, she's just kept a low profile while quietly building a body of acting work and handling a number of personal issues: ex-husband drama, disturbing accusations against her father, and being a mom to two boys. Find out why you haven't heard from Heche in a long time.

Divorce takes up a lot of time

Everybody knows that a nasty break up or divorce can send a person into hiding. Just ask Heche, who in 2007 split from Coley Laffoon, her husband of five years. According to People, their divorce turned nasty when Laffoon charged that Heche was maybe incapable of caring for their son Homer. She had previously documented her mental instability in her memoir Call Me Crazy. To make matters worse, he demanded cash to accommodate his already plush lifestyle. Among his requests were $28,000 a month in spousal support, nearly $10,000 in mortgage money, and, of course, primary custody.
Controversies rock Hollywood in 2017

"It is disappointing that Coley Laffoon has resorted to filing lies with the court because Anne would not cave in to his astronomical monetary demands," a rep for Heche said. "For the past several years the child's father has refused to get a job in order to contribute financially to the child's care."

Their jabs and insults toward each other came to an end in 2009 when the couple reached a settlement. Heche agreed to pay $3,700 a month in child support. She and her ex-husband also agreed to split both physical and legal custody of their son. Although Laffoon did not receive any spousal support, he got a $515,000 lump sum from Heche and half of their community property. This was one nasty breakup.

She's keeping her romance quiet

Since her first marriage ended with so much public drama, it seems Heche has taken a very quiet approach to love the second time around. In fact, she's deeply in love with a man name James Tupper. As Closer explains, they've been together for nearly 10 years and have no rush to jump the broom. Instead, they prefer having a long-term engagement. "Eternally engaged is fantastic," Heche quipped. "Every year I get a new ring, and I am not kidding."

Another reason they're slow to make it official is the fact that Tupper has been married before too. "I have quite a collection [of rings]," she dished to the The Telegraph. "Besides, I've been married before and so has he. I don't know what either of us would gain or what would change that would benefit us." But, Heche isn't totally ruling out the idea of marriage. Heche quipped, "When I'm 60, I'm happy to walk down the aisle!"

She's still avoiding questions on Ellen DeGeneres
Assault laws in focus amid Weinstein saga

At one point and time, Heche was best known for dating comedian and talk show hostess Ellen DeGeneres. Their romance was splashed across newspapers. They met at a Vanity Fair Oscar party in 1997 and dated for three years. But when they split, it seems all hell broke loose and the breakup left DeGeneres sulking in her feelings while Heche moved on to Laffoon. DeGeneres told the Los Angeles Times it was "the first time I ever had my heart broken." Heche, on the other hand, took a different approach telling the public, DeGeneres gave her the best sex she had ever had until she met her then-husband Laffoon.

Fast forward to today, Heche seems to be embarrassed by the topic of DeGeneres, even though it's part of her claim to fame in Hollywood. In 2014, Maximo TV interviewed Heche and Tupper on the red carpet of the 24th annual Night of 100 Stars Oscar Viewing Gala. Things seemed to be going fine until the reporter asked what she thought of DeGeneres hosting the event.

"James, I'll let you take that one," Heche said with wide-open eyes and running away from the camera. Tupper shot back to the reporter, "Who?"

Perhaps her desire to avoid questions on her past loves has forced her to shy away from red carpet interviews over the years.

Motherhood is demanding

Having kids is a full-time job that can often pull parents away from busy careers and projects. In 2009, Heche welcomed a second son, Atlas, with Tupper. "It's a bit like having an unreasonable employer," Tupper quipped to People about having a baby. "He doesn't give breaks." Although, he says Atlas was a decent kid adding, "I always imagine babies crying. He doesn't really. He's very sweet. He's in a warm bath of love and attention."

While parenthood was going well for the couple, Tupper soon returned to work on his TV show Mercy, which filmed in New York. That meant Tupper became bicoastal with Heche caring for two kids while her husband worked across the country. When the magazine asked about Heche's feelings about that he said, "She's taking it a day at a time."

Her career certainly reflected her lack of participation in Hollywood during that time. Her IMDb resume shows she took on one project in 2009 and another project in 2010, for which she was uncredited. Her career resumed in 2011 with a 30-episode run in Hung.

Financial troubles can be tough to handle

Back in 2016, Heche filed papers suggesting she could no longer afford the agreed upon child support payments to Lafoon of $3,700 a month. According to the Daily Mail, she asked a judge to reduce that amount based on her new income level, which that she was not working as often. It was lowered to $1,175 a month, while documents also showed her income dropped down to $34,000 a month.

If the scenario rings a bell, it's because in 2008, before she reached a settlement with Laffoon, Heche begged the court to reduce her payments for the same reason. She was paying upwards of $15,000 a month to her ex-husband for various costs. "Since January 18, 2008, I have been unemployed and had no income from employment except for one very short-term contract for a movie role for which I received a total of $65,000, approximately the amount I received for one episode of Men In Trees," she told the court of her financial distress. "I do receive some residuals from previous acting work. However, the amounts are nominal and are offset by recurring business expenses that must be paid whether or not I am working."

While fans may be looking for Heche on the latest issue of People magazine or chatting with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, she's busy giving back to those less fortunate. In September 2017, after Hurricane Maria destroyed Puerto Rico, she and Tupper launched a CrowdRise page called "My Next Check" to encourage everyone to donate money to relief.

"My Next Check just came out of an understanding that as I was watching CNN and seeing the devastation, I thought, 'I can look at my next paycheck, and donate something,'" she told People. They coordinated their efforts with the Red Cross and United for Puerto Rico. "This is a campaign that's going to have to last months and months. Right now, the needs are gas, water, food, so that they can start doing something. They can't move. They're 3.4 million people who are desperately in need of water and food and healthcare, so that's where it's going to go first. If you put the money into the campaign, I can guarantee it will never go anywhere ever near anything other than Puerto Rico." The couple even encouraged Donald Trump to donate one his presidential paychecks. As of November 2017, it's raised just under $25,000.

Her molestation took over the spotlight
Royal shock: ‘Spacey groped me’

When it comes to family issues from her childhood, Heche has a lot to say. In fact, much of the focus in the past has been on her accusations against her father, and not her acting work. In a 20/20 interview, Heche claims her father sexually molested her. "I think it's always hard for children to talk about abuse because it is only memory," Heche said, recalling her father's abuse. "I didn't carry around a tape recorder … I didn't chisel anything in stone … Anybody can look and say, 'Well how do you know for sure?' And that's one of the most painful things about it. You don't."

To add fuel to the fire, Heche claims her father gave her herpes. "I had a rash, I had sores, I had welts on my nose and on my lips," she said. Because of this trying time in her life, she believes it pushed the limits of her mental stability. She claims the abuse caused her to escape to a "fourth dimension" that gave her some sort of security. "I had a fantasy world that I escaped to," she explained. "I called my other personality Celestia. I believed I was from that world. I believed I was from another planet. I think I was insane."

She's done lesser-known movies

Showbiz watchers expecting to see Heche land on the silver screen with a big dramatic role may need to shift their focus. In the last few years, the actor has taken on TV movies in lieu of constant blockbuster hits. According to her IMDb resume, she starred in 2016's Hallmark holiday film Looks Like Christmas. Along with her on-screen husband, played by actor Dylan Neal, the duo discover the true meaning of Christmas while battling for control over their child's  middle school holiday event.

According to the Hallmark Channel, Heche also starred in the 2014 holiday film, One Christmas Eve. The TV movie was so popular it became the highest rated cable airing of any Hallmark Hall of Fame movie.

While it may seem Christmas and holiday movies are out of the ordinary for Heche, she's actually big fan of the red and green. "We rock it! We do. We go nuts," Tupper told Us Weekly of holiday traditions at their house. "We have a giant tree and presents." Heche added that "ham and turkey" are food staples.

Her latest show isn't doing well

In 2017, Heche was cast as the lead in the NBC drama The Brave. Unfortunately, reviews have slammed the show. Heche plays Patricia Campbell, a CIA official, grieving over the death of her son who died in combat. As USA Today reviewed of the series, "The biggest complaint is that its characters are not engaging or deep enough to draw viewers in and make them care about the missions on a deeper level."

The New York Post predicted it would be canceled soon, and touted that Heche was "miscast" in the series.

Heche even admitted in an interview with Backstage that the role has been a tough one. "I do feel like I'm growing a lot as an actor. It's a very physical role, but the challenge of her is to get out my giddiness," she explained. "I wouldn't say I'm one of the most serious women in the world, but I do feel very honored by being asked to represent a woman of this stature and this position. Accessing that part of myself that believes that I could pull this off is probably the most challenging. It's holding that knowledge, because there are people that do this in the world and I want to respect that."

Her latest role could earn her a comeback

Luckily for Heche, she's got plenty of work, it seems. She co-stars in the thriller, My Friend Dahmer, about infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Heche plays Dahmer's mother, Joyce, in the film, which was released on November 3 2017.
Spacey apologises, comes out as gay

"Well, I feel that parents have a responsibility to their children when they have them," Heche told Entertainment Weekly of wanting to take on the creepy role. "Although we were not doing a film about blame, and whose fault it is, I do have a very strong point of view that when a child is ignored, bad things will happen."

"Joyce is pretending that she is not responsible for what her child is doing, and the behavior that he is expressively demonstrating, openly demonstrating," she added of her character. "He is begging for attention, and she doesn't give it, and so I do think it's her fault, partly."

Will this role make her a more regular fixture at the movies? Only time will tell.
